On deadline day, LASK pulled off a real transfer coup: Austrian international striker Saša Kalajdžić is moving from the English Premier League to the Athletiker. The 28-year-old forward joins on a one-year loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Just last Sunday, Kalajdžić featured in the Premier League against Everton, but the 2.00-metre-tall striker will now return to the Austrian Bundesliga on loan until the end of the season to lead LASK’s attack. “I’m very happy to be here. This was the best solution for everyone involved, and both clubs quickly came to an agreement. For me it’s important to get playing time, and Wolverhampton supported me a lot in this decision,” said the 19-cap international, who will wear the No. 10 shirt for the Linz club. Kalajdžić hopes to use his spell at LASK to earn a national team comeback and, if Austria qualify, a place at the World Cup.

“I just want to enjoy football, stay fit, get as many minutes as possible and play consistently at a good level. LASK can offer me that. We have a good team and a good environment. I already know some of the players from earlier, and I’ve only heard good things,” he added. Kalajdžić also cited sporting director Dino Buric — whom he worked with at Admira — as an important factor in the move.

At Wolves, Kalajdžić completed the full summer pre-season under head coach Vítor Pereira and made his competitive comeback at the end of August in the League Cup against West Ham. In total, the Vienna-born forward made 16 appearances for the Premier League side. Kalajdžić had previously proven his class and scoring ability in the German Bundesliga with VfB Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt. After joining Stuttgart from Admira Wacker in 2019, he became a key player and difference-maker, recording 36 goal involvements (24 goals, 12 assists) in 60 appearances.

First Austrian goalscorer in a European Championship knockout stage

At that point, Kalajdžić had raised his market value to €25 million and attracted interest from the English Premier League with his performances. He was also a regular member of the Austrian national team, featuring in all four matches at the UEFA Euro 2021 finals. In the round of 16, the centre-forward scored Austria’s goal in the 2–1 defeat against Italy, becoming the first Austrian player ever to score in a European Championship knockout stage. Overall, he has recorded four goals in 19 senior international appearances for Austria.

Kalajdžić received his footballing education in his native Vienna, progressing through SV Donau Wien, SR Donaufeld and First Vienna before making the step to Admira. He made his professional debut there in July 2017 and soon caught the eye with 12 goals and 12 assists in 35 appearances.

This transfer is something very special for us and represents a win-win situation for everyone involved. With Saša Kalajdžić , we are getting one of the best Austrian strikers, while at the same time giving him the opportunity to recommend himself for a return to the national team and, ideally, to fulfil his dream of participating in a World Cup. Saša has impressively demonstrated his goalscoring ability and quality at every stage of his career, and it fills us with great joy and pride that we have been able to bring him back from the Premier League to the Bundesliga. Our thanks also go to those responsible at Wolverhampton, who were very accommodating in making this loan possible.

Mergim Bresilla, CFO

I got to know and appreciate Saša during my time at Admira, and I have followed his development very closely ever since. He is an absolute exceptional player and an asset to the entire Austrian Bundesliga. With his goalscoring instinct, physical presence, aerial strength and technical qualities, he brings many important components to the team. In addition, he is a true team player with an outstanding character. Saša has completed the full pre-season with Wolverhampton, and we are convinced that he will be able to help us very quickly.
